The WWE Network is nearing a two year anniversary! It is hard to believe that we are approaching two years of the service. With that being said, the service has introduced several new features over the past two years. This includes a watchlist and a viewed list.
However, like any service there is plenty to improve on the interface. This goes for both visibility but also accessibility and general enjoyment of the product. A lot of topics can, and likely will be discussed in the future but for now I want to talk specifically about one: Playlists.
Comments from user bvd1022 led to me thinking about this topic again. I’ve had several ideas for the service that would both improve functionality, make things easier and more enjoyable for users, and maybe, just maybe, even become a draw for subscribers. And ultimately, all of those are important for their business.
Now granted, we already have a watchlist. I don’t mean to seem unappreciative, but the truth is the watchlist feature is pretty poor. Sure, we can set entire series. But what good is setting an entire series when the watchlist doesn’t even have an autoplay feature? Beyond that, I feel like the current system just limits what can be done by quite a bit. A playlist system, eliminating the watchlist, would allow multiple playlists to be saved. Add on auto-play and suddenly you can sit back and watch those short form series without clicking a hundred times. This might not draw people to the service but it will certainly encourage people using what the library has to offer.
But aside from just accessibility and becoming more useful, an improved playlist feature can actually be a draw to the service. I firmly believe in an idea I call “suggested playlists”. Suggested playlists would act as a compilation of some kind that the WWE themselves put together. And it could work a number of ways. The most obvious would be for the Beyond The Ring documentaries. While we often have the documentary we typically don’t have the matches that come with them. Well, thanks to this playlist, you can actually have the match compilations!
It can be so much more than preexisting material, however. Why not do entire feuds? Why not have a playlist covering the Shawn Michaels and Triple H feud in full? Or The Miz’s entire WWE Championship run, showcasing each defense? Maybe a playlist that could showcase every WWE title change ever? The possibilities are near-endless. And with social media and websites like this, reddit, etc. people would have some amazing playlist recommendations or tutorials that could really make everything even more fun and interactive. This would only make subscribing to the service even more appealing.
