Pretty much since the WWE Network has debuted, a rumored show has been discussed by fans and reporters alike. The rumor was that a Cruiserweight themed show would debut at some stage featuring smaller talent with a more high flying and fast paced presentation.
Needless to say, this excited fans. While nothing ever came of it, the rumor kept popping up as something being possible. Recently, those rumors seem to be floating around again and this time have some heavier hitters in the reporting world including the Wrestling Observer claiming that not only is it discussed, but it is now being planned. The idea of mixing “hot indie” talent with developmental talent could make for a very exciting show. This opens up a lot of potential talents being used. Imagine a Trevor Lee or Andrew Everett appearing on a WWE Network show? The only real shame is so many quality guys are currently signed to deals with New Japan and Ring of Honor, as an ACH or a Ricochet appearing on the show could be fantastic as well.
I would have liked to see a guy like Neville appear on here as well, as he is such a good talent who could really shine here, but supposing he isn’t perhaps a high flying veteran could be Matt Sydal? While he works for New Japan my understanding, which may be incorrect, is that he isn’t signed to a deal anywhere. And what could be more fitting for the former Evan Bourne than a cruiserweight show? Maybe Johnny Gargano could be showcased on the show? I think an outlet like this would also be an excellent way to bring in Solomon Crowe again since he has a good relationship with the company still. And it would be an excellent way of debuting La Sombra. Of course, this is all just wishful thinking right now.
Still, the idea of more in ring action available on the WWE Network is certainly one I can get behind. Original content is something the service has struggled with and this would be an exciting offering. Add in something being quite different in terms of presentation to what we are used to and I think this could be game changing for the service. Could it lead to something similar for women? Maybe not a series but even an all female special could be something the service considers in the future supposing this would be successful.
