The WWE Network Collections section featured collections of different subjects. These are essentially playlists of whatever theme happens to be discussed. For example, the TLC Tag Teams Collection focuses on the feud between the Dudleys, the Hardys, and Edge and Christian. The WWE has stated new collections will be added to the service every month, with most likely not to be removed. The only real drawback for this series is a lack of an auto-play feature on the service, otherwise the collections have a lot of potential.
Part one of the DX collection has already been reviewed here, and don’t forget the Shane McMahon collection is also currently being reviewed right here at WWENetworkNews.com! The first part of the collection was good and featured a decent amount of Chyna, which was fitting after her untimely passing. Now looking ahead, this portion should cover the second phrase of DX and maybe even a bit of the third. Let’s take a look:
Building An Army
This clips takes place on RAW 253 from March 30th, 1998. This is important because with Shawn Michaels’ departure, right now only Triple H and Chyna are left for DX. But not for long, as Triple H brings in an old friend – formerly the 1-2-3 Kid, X-Pac! This was a nice get for the World Wrestling Federation, but it gets better.
X-Pac uses Eric Bischoff firing him as a trigger for a fun shootish interview where he calls Bischoff out and makes note that Kevin Nash and Scott Hall would have come with him if they could have. This was a big moment in the Monday Night War, and a big step toward DX finding themselves again. At only about seven minutes, this is worth watching.
Oh You Didn’t Know?
After the previous clip, we knew something else was coming on this same show, and it did. We join the cage match between Chainsaw Charlie and Cactus Jack taking on The New Age Outlaws in progress. At just over fight minutes, obviously we don’t get the entirety of the cage match, instead only getting the finish which saw DX run down and cost Jack and Funk the win by blasting Jack with a chair. This leads to a spike piledriver an the Outlaws are champions!
Needless to say, Billy Gunn and Road Dogg Jesse James join DX as all four men beat down Cactus Jack and Terry Funk. The show goes off the air with DX celebrating on top of the cage and the DX army has gotten a serious makeover. Good segment here.
Crossing Enemy Lines
Nearly a month later on April 27, 1998 on RAW 257, we had the infamous series of segments where Triple H, Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, Chyna, and X-Pac ride around on a tank and attempt to invade World Championship Wrestling. I’ve seen this, along with another part we’ll be seeing soon, so many times that I can’t even pretend to have interest in it.
Trying to put that aside, it obviously is extremely popular and one of the more controversial moments of the Monday Night Wars. Can you imagine if they did get inside, or if WCW had put the cameras on them? Not sure of the legalities of it, but it sure would have been big. Fun enough stuff here, but I’ve seen it far too much. Speaking of…
Going Corporate?
The infamous D-Generation X skits are so overplayed, so while some were frustrated that they placed this one here instead of the Nation of Domination one, I am for it. If I never see the Nation of Domination skit again I will not shed a single tear. Of course, it was a classic, but I’ve seen it far too many times and I’m pretty much set with never seeing it again.
On RAW 290, the DX parody the Corporation and it is definitely amusing. But at fourteen minutes, this is a very long segment. Eventually, Shawn Michaels and the Corporation come out frustrated with DX’s parody and give some verbal shots of their own. One very amusing one, especially in retrospect, was Shawn saying Triple H only hangs out with World Champions, he has never been one. God stuff.
A Whole New Game
New Age Outlaws (Billy Gunn and Road Dogg) vs. Steve Austin and The Rock
We leap ahead to October 25, 1999 when DX had broken up and Triple H is the WWE Champion. RAW 335 sees the New Age Outlaws taking on The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin in a pretty big match. And the match itself is pretty much what you’d expect from this time period. A decent enough match, but it was ultimately about the angle.
And that angle saw Triple H run down and brawl with Austin leaving Rock to take on the Outlaws on his own. When he’s seemingly about to beat them, X-Pac shows up and blasts the Rock with a championship belt, allowing the Outlaws to win. Soon all three beat down Austin and Rock as Triple H comes down. DX has reunited in what is definitely an effective end to RAW. Decent match, but really fun story. The video is long at sixteen minutes, however, so this might not be for everyone.
Winners: The New Age Outlaws
DX ‘The Kings’
This is the music video for “The Kings” by Run DMC which for a short time would be D-Generation X’s theme song. It is a fun video and a fun song, but there isn’t much else to say about this. I’m sure most people don’t even remember this, but it was fun.
Stand Back and Look Up
Another DX parody, but this one skipped ahead almost nine years into the future. It aired on June 26th, 2006 and it had Triple H parodying Vince McMahon while Shawn Michaels parodied Shane McMahon. It was ridiculous and over the top like always, but still a lot of fun. Of course, Triple H discussed Vince’s obsession with roosters and Shawn mocked Shane’s energetic movements.
At nearly sixteen minutes, this did more than just a basic parody as we also saw them parody and show Vince McMahon’s now legendary performance of Stand Back at the Slammys. Then when the McMahons and Spirit Squad came out, they became covered with.. well, human excrement. This definitely isn’t for everyone, and I can see why people grew to dislike the new DX, but I thought it was fun. Just a bit long.
DX-Rated Production
On July 3rd, 2006 DX continued their takeover and they continued their harassment of the McMahons. D-Generation X would take control of the production truck, which means they would edit Vince McMahon’s voice or air him using the urinal, which then led to him peeing on Jonathan Coachman’s feet and legs. Yeah, this was DX alright.
This was another long video, however. At fourteen minutes, this combined with the other videos in this collection mean you’ll be spending a lot of time with DX. So if you’re only interested in short clips, this might start to be a drag for you.
Give Me A D! Give Me An X!
Five On Two Handicap
The Spirit Squad (Kenny, Mikey, Nicky, Johnny, and Mitch) vs. D-Generation X (Shawn Michaels and Triple H)
In the previous video, Vince McMahon made a match at the upcoming Saturday Night’s Main Event where all five members of the Spirit Squad would take on DX in a five on two handicap match. This is that match. And while it is a match, and one with seven individuals, it is still quite shorter than some of the other segments we’ve seen in this collection at only about twelve minutes in length.
Mitch and Johnny were eliminated very early on, while Nicky, Kenny, and Mikey then took heat on Shawn. This wouldn’t last long, as Triple H would tag in and pedigree Dolph to eliminate him, then he’d quickly eliminate Mikey as well. This led to Kenny then being out quickly. Some people get angry at this, but ultimately the Spirit Squad were what they were, and I can’t complain much about two of the top guys in the company taking care of the cheerleader gimmick having kids quickly. Fine enough for what this was supposed to be, a feel good match to pop the crowd. It worked.
Closing Thoughts
Due to the overall size of this collection, even with three parts each review features more content than most. As a result, some of the longer segments definitely wore me down a bit more than maybe they should have. But overall, this was really fun. The Attitude Era DX and 2006 DX certainly weren’t the same, but both had plenty of laughs. Overall, two thirds of the way in, I’d say this was a successful collection.
Looking ahead to the third and final part, it features primarily best of’s and the like, so it should be a bit of a quick review for me as I likely won’t rewatch their DVD. But for those looking for a longer DX experience, it is certainly coming.
