As you likely have heard by now, Swerved’s second season is hitting the WWE Network in full on Monday, June 6th. However WWE Network News is here with a review of the first two episodes of the season, along with exclusive photos that you won’t see anywhere else. Needless to say, spoilers will exist thanks to the images however I don’t intend on giving too much away in the review. Regardless, viewers be warned. Here is the review for the first episode.
Episode 1
The first episode of the second season of Swerved is titled “Who Woulda Thoughts?” and it features three key bits. The first is a play on the security bit from the previous season, the second is an ear piercing bit, and the other is a presentation bit. I thought one of the bits were excellent, one was fun and cringe-worthy in the best kind of way, and one sort of fell flat with me. Let’s take a closer look:
Security
This was the first bit we had in this episode and also the last as we continually came back to it. And I loved it. This is one of my favorite bits in the history of the show already just for the ridiculous nature of it. The WWE star featured here was The Miz, but it wasn’t him getting pranked. Instead, the WWE hired a security guard to man the door and his job was to only let people in who were on the list.
Needless to say, The Miz wasn’t on the list. From there, even more wackiness occurs and the entire thing just really worked for me. As much fun as it is seeing Superstars get pranked, seeing “civilians” get pranked by the Superstars might be even better. Here, anyway. This bit was excellent.
Oh, and the best part about this? Even when it was revealed to the guy he was on a hidden camera prank show, he still wouldn’t let The Miz in the building. This guy did not want to lose his job. I’d be fairly surprised if most people didn’t at least enjoy this bit. Then again, I won’t ever claim to have a normal sense of humor.
Taste Test
And this on the other hand was my least favorite sketch on the first episode. It wasn’t technically “bad”. I wasn’t disgusted or angry, or anything close to that. It just wasn’t very amusing to me. It reminded me a lot of the Fine Brothers’ Kids React To Food series on Youtube, but not as well produced.
The idea of Taste Test was in theory a combination of the aforementioned Fine Brothers Youtube show and TruTV’s Impractical Jokers in that a presentation is being given with the guys reacting and telling the presenter what to do while out there.
The gist of the bit here is that the presenter is having the kids taste-test different New Day themed food for release due to the success of their Booty O’s. But of course, everything is intentionally bad tasting and the kids react accordingly. This was alright, but definitely my least favorite part of the show.
Bloody Mess
Of the big three, this was my second favorite prank of the episode but in general, I thought it was amusing. In this sketch we had Paige, Charlotte, and Sasha Banks all make appearances, with Paige being the main focus.
In this bit, Paige is at a Hot Topic store and giving away free piercings. She offers a free piercing to the girls who come in, but Charlotte is in line first. And needless to say, the piercing doesn’t go as they should and it causes a pretty amusing reaction from those considering getting the piercings next.
My favorite bits from this and TruTV’s Impractical Jokers are usually ones like this and season one’s Fandango and Heath Slater bit where they mess with people outside of wrestling or outside of the normal show. The reactions people give are fairly unpredictable and almost always quite amusing. And in this case, someone has no problem telling Paige what she thinks. This was a good one.
Closing Thoughts
And that’s the first episode of the second season of WWE Swerved. Overall, I thought it delivered. Sure, not every bit was a complete hit, but Swerved is never a show that has every single bit appeal to the viewer. Instead, different parts will appeal to different people. Naturally, that means that the ones I loved, others might find silly or uninteresting and enjoy the one I didn’t appreciate.
Overall, though, this was a successful first episode and I can definitely see people binge watching the series. And with auto-play being integrated into more and more devices, it seems possible that binge watching Swerved will be easier than ever.
