Wrestlemania Rewind! An early hit on the WWE Network, the documentary series took a look at major Wrestlemania matches. The show would give background on the match and why it was important, with talking heads discussing it. Then we would see the match in its entirety. It was a very fun series, and one that seemingly ended prematurely.
I’ve pushed for quite some time that the show should return. There are plenty of memorable and important Wrestlemania matches that haven’t been given attention, and plenty of just fun ones that could have some interesting stories. But then that leads to the main topic of this article: why stop there?
People enjoy Wrestlemania Rewind. Sometimes it will still pop up in the Top 20 Most Popular lists, in our very own poll, the series beat out Camp WWE by a sizable margin, and people clamor for more original content. And while I recognize that there are still plenty of topics to cover for Wrestlemania Rewind, at some point they will run out of big and important matches. So why not expand it to include other shows? For example, Summerslam Rewind.
The biggest party of the summer has been around since 1988! That is 28 years of history. And with that comes many big matches that are either great in quality, or important for other reasons. Whether that means a match like Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H from 2002 that featured Shawn’s return to in-ring competition or the controversial 2005 match Shawn had with Hulk Hogan, Nexus vs. Team WWE, the infamous John Cena/Brock Lesnar match, or Bulldog/Hart, there are plenty of matches that are either important for good reasons, bad reasons, or just downright entertaining reasons. And later if need be, this could be expanded even further to include other events such as Survivor Series (Undertaker’s debut, Alliance vs. WWF, The Rock and John Cena teaming up, etc.) or the Royal Rumble.
The truth is the content is ready and available. This is a cheap way of making quality content that hits nostalgia points for fans while also educating younger or less devoted fans. And as we know, that could lead to these individuals diving deeper into the archives. So not only do we have more content that people actively want to see that is cheap and easy to produce, but it could create more fan interest in content already available on the service. In all honesty, the idea seems can’t miss. Let’s just hope in the future, the WWE will consider bringing the series back and expanding upon it.
