The WWE Network brought us yet another episode of WWE NXT TV. This week Asuka’s opponent for NXT TakeOver: Toronto was revealed, the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament continued and much more!
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round Match
#DIY vs. Hoho Lun and Tian Bing
The show kicks off with another Dusty Rhodes Tournament match with the team of Johnny Gargano and Tomasso Ciampa taking on newcomers Hoho Lun and Tian Bing.
This was a very enjoyable match and for Lun, he looked a lot more impressive in this match than he did when he was participating in the CWC. As for Bing, who is WWE’s first Chinese signing, his debut match on NXT TV was also impressive.
Unfortunately though this wasn’t enough as the match came to an end with Gargano making a blind tag, hitting Lun with a spear and getting the win with a superkick/knee strike combination.
This win for #DIY means they will face The Revival in the second round.
Winners: #DIY
We cut to a backstage segment with WWE Cruiserweight Champion TJ Perkins and his tag team partner in the Dusty Classic Kota Ibushi. Perkins explains that when Hideo Itami had to be replaced due to injury, he jumped at the chance to replace him and team with Ibushi.
Perkins calls Ibushi a cool kid and that they bring out the best in one another.Perkins makes a reference to Ibushi’s overall in a video game being a 95, Ibushi corrects him though and says he’s more a 99.
Another backstage segment this time featuring Samoa Joe who discusses changing his mind about attacking WWE NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura last week. He explains that evening the odds is all he wants to do. Joe says that he knows he got to Nakamura after putting him on the shelf after he dislocated Joe’s jaw. He says that Nakamura is scared and that he can put him back on the shelf once again.
Singles Match
Aliyah vs. Billie Kay w/ Peyton Royce
Billie Kay and Peyton Royce are still convinced they’re the next women to take over the women’s division and once again they make their presence known in this match. Kay shows off her aggressive side towards Aliyah (who continues to impress me each week).
While Kay had Royce for backup throughout the match, it wasn’t long before Liv Morgan showed up to provide backup for Aliyah, preventing Royce from getting involved in the match, this assisted Aliyah in rolling up Kay for a pinfall.
There’s a short brawl after the match with both Billie Kay and Peyton Royce once again looking strong after Liv’s face is driven into Billie’s knee by Peyton.
Winner: Aliyah
Singles Match
Tye Dillinger vs. Noah Potjes
This was fairly quick match with Tye getting the win in less than two minutes. However, it was the aftermath that carried on the Dillinger/Roode saga. Tye is interviewed at the top of the stage following his match about this opportunity in Toronto. He says that the only glorious thing that Bobby Roode has done lately is run.
Roode appears from the side of the stage and viciously attacks Dillinger. He strikes him with a series of punches before rolling up his sleeves and planting him with the implant DDT on the steel stage, posing over his motionless body.
Winner: Tye Dillinger
Backstage are TM61 being interviewed about facing the team of Austin Aries and newcomer Roderick Strong in the next round of the Dusty Rhodes Classic. They explain that they are preparing for this match in the same way they prepare for every match.
Singles Match
NXT Women’s Champion Asuka vs. Thea Trinidad
In this non-title match we watched as Asuka took out Thea Trinidad with a melee of strikes. Trinidad makes various attempts to take out Asuka but her attacks go unsold. Asuka eventually fires up as one strike has an effect but Asuka quickly gets the victory with a german suplex that she quickly turns into an armbar to claim the victory.
Winner: Asuka
After the match, as shown in the video above, William Regal makes his way out to the stage and reveals that he has found a brand new opponent for Asuka at NXT TakeOver: Toronto in former WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James.
In the video package James talks about how Asuka hasn’t beaten anyone until she defeats her adding that she has defeated the women who laid the foundations for the women’s revolution that’s going on right now and that in Toronto, they will call it an international incident. Asuka appeared very happy with Regal’s choice in opponent.
Backstage is Paul Ellering and The Authors of Pain who are interviewed about the progression of the team and that their upcoming opponents No Way Jose and Rich Swann have bright futures, but won’t make it any further in the tournament thanks to the Authors of Pain who then speak individually in another language.
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round Match
TJ Perkins and Kota Ibushi vs. Lince Dorado and Mustafa Ali
The main event of the evening saw Ibushi and Perkins team up, in a partnership that worked fairly well throughout the match. A number of fast paced exchanges took place with some back and forth action with both teams.
The match ends in under ten minutes with Mustafa Ali tagging in to become the legal man, he plants Kota with a dragon whip kick. Perkins is fast and grabs Ali into the knee bar forcing him to do nothing other than tap giving them the win. I felt this match could have gone a little longer and had a bigger finish but it worked, I guess.
Winners: TJ Perkins and Kota Ibushi
