WWE’s latest big event aired today when the WWE re-debuted their old-school Saturday staple, Saturday Night’s Main Event. This special dates back to 1985 and featured the biggest matches outside of the PPV’s at the time until 1992. With a first revival in 2006-2008, they lowered the importance of those specials, but this attempt has been shown to be more faithful to the old-school format of SNME.
This edition emanates from World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, and will feature multiple landmark matches. With Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk main-eventing by teaming with Cody Rhodes to face Gunther and Sami Zayn, Paige and Brie Bella defending the Women’s Tag Titles against Fatal Influence, JD McDonagh avenging Judgement Day by facing Danhausen in a No DQ match, Bayley and Lyra having a grudge match and more. Below are the Countdown to WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event notes for 07/18/26:
- This is the first WWE Countdown show to be 30 minutes long since the NXT Battleground 2023 Kickoff.
- Joe Tessitore and Stephanie McMahon hosted the Countdown panel.
- WWE United States Champion Trick Williams defeated AAA’s Laredo Kid by pinfall after a Trickshot.
- Highlights of Fanatics Fest were shown.
- Steph interviewed Oba Femi inside of the ring about his match against Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.

- WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship: Fatal Influence defeated Brie Bella and Paige (c) by pinfall with a roll-up reversal to become the new champions.
- No DQ: Danhausen defeated JD McDonagh by pinfall after a Triple D.
- Lyra Valkyria defeated Bayley by referee stoppage after a bully choke.
- Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes defeated Gunther and Sami Zayn by pinfall after a GTS.

- Sami Zayn complained about his main event spot at this event. Gunther told him to stay out of the way.
- During the No DQ match, multiple Minihausens attacked JD and Dom but got fended off. Karl Anthony Towns came out of the cloning machine to help Danhausen win.
- John Cena advertised the Never Seen 17 collection for Club WWE.
- Lyra Valkyria debuted a new, darker variation on her theme song.
- Lyra got a bloody nose during her match, which prompted the referee to step in and wipe the blood away on multiple occasions.
- After her win, Lyra attacked Bayley and gave her a Nightwing on the steps to drive her point home.
- WWE announced AAA Eternal Glory and NXT Stand and Deliver from New York City at WrestleMania Weekend.
- SmackDown GM Nick Aldis hit Gunther with the WWE Championship title during the end of the main event match to help Punk and Rhodes win.
- With Punk and Rhodes winning the match, CM Punk vs Cody Rhodes remains a 1-on-1 match.
- Jalen Brunson and World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns came out and did a “greatness acknowledges greatness” type promo and gave Brunson a custom title replica. Seth Rollins and Tyrese Haliburton interrupted the party and Seth attempted an attack on Reigns, but got stopped by Brunson and fended off to close the show.
